Nolan Wells Update: Autopsy Findings Raise New Questions About His dєatᩚh

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — More than two months after 18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead near Horn Island, Mississippi, questions surrounding his final hours remain unresolved.

A state autopsy determined that Wells’ cause and manner of dєatᩚh were undetermined, while a separate examination commissioned by his family also could not establish exactly how he died. The findings have continued to fuel disagreement between Wells’ family and investigators over what happened after he disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip.

What the Autopsy Found

The official autopsy did not identify a fatal injury or an underlying organic disease that explained Wells’ dєatᩚh.

The grand jury report said there was bruising on the back of Wells’ head, but investigators determined that the injury was not fatal. A witness told the grand jury that he saw Wells slip awkwardly from the side of a boat at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 4. The witness could not say whether Wells struck his head, and testified that Wells continued socializing afterward.

The state medical examiner ultimately listed the cause and manner of dєatᩚh as undetermined. Drowning was described as a diagnosis of exclusion rather than a definitive determination of how Wells entered the water or died.

That distinction has become central to the family’s concerns.

Independent Examination Found Additional Injuries

A private autopsy requested by Wells’ family was performed by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell.

Mitchell also concluded that the cause and manner of dєatᩚh remained undetermined pending further investigation. His examination, however, documented additional findings involving the back of Wells’ head and body.

The independent report described an area of hemorrhage and tissue disruption that Mitchell said was compatible with a very recent injury. He also documented a large area of abnormal discoloration around the back of the neck and skull, although he could not determine precisely what caused it.

The findings have prompted Wells’ family and attorney Ben Crump to continue questioning how the injuries occurred.

But neither the independent autopsy nor the state examination concluded that these injuries caused Wells’ dєatᩚh.

No Evidence of a Fatal Organ Injury

Claims circulating online that Wells’ organs were “badly damaged” should be treated cautiously.

The grand jury report states that the state medical examiner found no evidence of a fatal injury or organic disease. The official findings therefore do not support describing a specific organ as having been badly damaged in a way that caused Wells’ dєatᩚh.

The central medical question remains unresolved: whether Wells drowned, how he entered the water and whether anything happened to him immediately before he went into the water.

Grand Jury Declined to Bring Charges

In September, a Jackson County grand jury unanimously returned a no true bill, meaning it declined to indict anyone in connection with Wells’ dєatᩚh.

The grand jury reviewed testimony from 43 witnesses and considered physical evidence, digital records, cellphone data, videos, GPS information and other investigative materials.

Jurors concluded there was no credible evidence that people aboard the Triton, Palm Beach or Tideline boats committed a crime related to Wells’ dєatᩚh. They also found that online interpretations of a Sea Tow call associated with the Triton were inaccurate.

The grand jury nevertheless acknowledged that questions could be revisited if credible new evidence emerges.

Wells’ Family Wants a Federal Investigation

Despite the grand jury decision, Wells’ parents continue to seek additional scrutiny.

On October 5, the family called for a federal investigation, arguing that too many questions surrounding their son’s dєatᩚh remain unanswered.

The FBI, however, has said it found no evidence of foul play or a crime and has supported the conclusion reached by local authorities, according to PEOPLE.

That leaves the case in an unusual position: authorities have not charged anyone, the grand jury found no criminal conduct, yet neither the official nor independent autopsy has definitively established the cause and manner of dєatᩚh.

The Questions That Remain

Nolan Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island with friends. His body was recovered two days later.

The investigation has established many details about the people, boats, digital evidence and events surrounding that trip. But the precise circumstances of Wells’ final moments remain unclear.

The unanswered questions include how he sustained the injuries documented during the autopsies, exactly how he entered the water and what happened between the time he was last seen and when his body was recovered.

For Wells’ family, those unanswered questions are the reason they continue to push for another investigation.

For authorities, the evidence reviewed so far has not established a criminal act.

And until credible new evidence changes that picture, Nolan Wells’ official cause and manner of dєatᩚh remain undetermined.
