Maya Gebala’s Inspiring Recovery: Young Tumbler Ridge School Shooting Survivor Reaches Another Major Milestone

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Twelve-year-old Maya Gebala, a survivor of the tragic Tumbler Ridge school shooting, has reached another encouraging milestone in her long road to recovery, bringing hope to supporters across Canada.

Following months of specialized care and rehabilitation at B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Maya recently enjoyed one of her biggest achievements since the incident—a day trip outside the hospital. Accompanied by her family, she visited the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park, where she spent time surrounded by tropical plants, colorful birds, and the peaceful atmosphere of nature.

Maya’s father, David Gebala, shared the meaningful moment on social media, explaining that it was the farthest the family had traveled with Maya since her hospitalization. He said the outing provided a welcome opportunity to step away from the hospital setting, even if only for a short time. Her mother, Cia Edmonds, described the experience as a sign that Maya is beginning to reconnect with everyday life.

According to her parents, Maya continues to make steady progress. They have noticed her becoming more responsive to the world around her, smiling more often, and showing greater engagement during daily activities. Each small improvement represents an important step forward after the severe injuries she sustained during the February 10 tragedy.

As Maya’s condition improves, her family is also preparing for the next stage of her recovery. They are currently searching for long-term accessible housing that will meet her medical and mobility needs once she is ready to transition from the hospital to a more permanent home environment.

Maya’s courage during the shooting, where she reportedly attempted to protect others, has made her a symbol of resilience and determination. Although the Tumbler Ridge tragedy claimed several lives and left others injured, Maya’s strength throughout her recovery has inspired countless people who continue to send messages of encouragement, prayers, and support.

Her family remains deeply grateful to the medical professionals caring for Maya while acknowledging that the rehabilitation process will continue to require patience and perseverance. With each new milestone, supporters across the country remain optimistic that Maya’s journey will continue to bring healing, hope, and brighter days in the months ahead.
