BREAKING: Trump Signals Possible FBI Investigation Into Nolan Wells’ dєatᩚh — “We’re Looking at That”

WASHINGTON — Nearly 100 days after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip and was later found dead on Mississippi’s Horn Island, President Donald Trump has indicated that a federal investigation may be under consideration.

Asked on October 7 whether he would push the FBI to launch an independent investigation into Wells’ dєatᩚh, Trump responded: “Well, we’re looking at that. Yes, we are.”

The brief statement immediately drew attention to a case that has divided public opinion, raised questions about the available medical evidence and left Wells’ family demanding answers.

However, Trump’s comments do not confirm that a new FBI investigation has been authorized. Reuters reported that the president was considering asking the bureau to examine the case.

A Fourth of July trip that ended in tᩚraɢedy

Wells, a Black student-athlete from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, went to Horn Island with friends for a holiday gathering on July 4, 2026.

He did not return with the group.

His family reported him missing that evening, setting off a search involving local authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service personnel.

Two days later, on July 6, a park ranger discovered his body near the northwestern end of Horn Island.

Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, including accounts of the boat trip and the events leading up to his dєatᩚh. But the medical findings did not produce a definitive cause or manner of dєatᩚh.

For Wells’ parents, the uncertainty surrounding those final hours has remained at the heart of their fight for answers.

The autopsy findings remain disputed
Both the Mississippi state medical examiner and a pathologist retained by Wells’ family classified his cause and manner of dєatᩚh as undetermined.

The state examination documented two contusions on the back of his scalp. The independent examination identified additional injuries, which the family’s representatives say deserve further scrutiny.

The family’s pathologist also reported findings that, in his assessment, did not establish drowning as the cause of dєatᩚh.

Those findings have become a central point of disagreement.

A Jackson County grand jury reviewed evidence and heard testimony from 43 witnesses before unanimously declining to indict anyone. The grand jury concluded that the evidence was consistent with drowning and found no credible evidence of criminal conduct by the people who traveled to or from Horn Island that day.

The grand jury’s decision did not resolve every question raised by the family about the medical findings. At the same time, the existence of unexplained injuries does not, by itself, establish that a crime occurred.

That distinction remains critical as calls for additional scrutiny grow louder.

Nolan’s family is asking federal officials to step in

Wells’ parents have argued that the investigation has not adequately answered their questions about his final hours.

Represented by civil-rights attorney Ben Crump, they have called for a full federal review, pointing in part to the fact that Horn Island is federal land.

Crump has publicly challenged the drowning explanation and argued that the injuries documented in the medical examinations should not be dismissed.

The family’s request comes after the state grand jury declined to bring charges and federal officials previously indicated that they had not identified evidence of foul play or criminal activity warranting a separate investigation.

Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath has also said investigators found no evidence that Wells’ dєatᩚh was racially motivated.

The family, however, continues to seek an independent examination of the evidence and a clearer account of what happened.

What Trump’s statement could mean

Trump’s October 7 remarks have introduced a new possibility into a case that had appeared to reach a major turning point after the grand jury’s decision.

But the wording matters.

The president said officials were “looking at” the possibility of an FBI investigation. He did not announce that the bureau had opened a new case, nor did he identify a timetable or specific investigative steps.

Whether the administration will formally request a new investigation — and whether federal authorities will agree to conduct one — remains unclear.

For now, the statement represents a potential development, not a confirmed investigative decision.

The questions that remain

The case continues to revolve around several unresolved issues: what happened during Wells’ final hours on Horn Island, how the injuries documented in the medical examinations occurred, and whether additional investigative work could clarify the circumstances of his dєatᩚh.

Authorities have not publicly established that anyone committed a crime, and no one should be treated as guilty based on online speculation.

But the family’s demand for answers has not ended.

For Wells’ parents, the grand jury’s decision did not provide the medical certainty or explanation they were seeking. Trump’s latest comments have now raised the possibility that federal officials could take another look.

Will the president’s statement lead to a formal federal investigation — or will Nolan Wells’ family continue searching for answers without one?
